This young woman is a "Mardi Gras Indian." The Mardi Gras Indians trace their heritage back to runaway slaves given shelter and other aid by the Native American tribes in Louisiana and other southern states. The Mardi Gras Indian tribes first appeared near the end of the 19th Century. Today, various of the tribes "mask" (don their elaborate regalia) during Mardi Gras, on Super Sunday, and on St. Joseph's night.
